Best Hotel Bang… For Your Buck
Posted February 16th, 2009 in Business Casual, Snappy Casual, Super Casual | PermalinkMark asks: What are the three BEST low cost hotels in DC?
Well, Mark, I’m not just saying this because I’m a lawyer, but… it depends. As you saw with inauguration, prices fluctuate here with demand. Now inauguration was a particular biggie, but even a pharmaceutical convention can unexpectedly hike up rates and limit availablity.
All that said, The Beacon is a steal. Especially in the nice weather when you get to enjoy the rooftop bar. Um, I mean, rooftop view. The Hotel Palomar and Hotel Helix are uber-hip Kimptons that you can get for around $120 a night. Finally, the Capitol Hilton at 16/K is only like $100 a night. It’s a bit generic, but nice enough and a better fit for Grandma (or anyone else that won’t enjoy a leopard print robe).

I agree on the hotels you mention, DC Concierge — I’ve stayed at Palomar and Helix and other Kimpton hotels, and I like all of them and their prices are always competitive.
I also recommend the Tabard Inn on N St NW between 17th & 18th; great location, and something of a European-style funky hotel. They have several different room options like a couple of large suites good for a family or group, sleeping 6, that are under $200/night, as well as single rooms that share a bathroom (starting at $113/night), and regular one- or two-bed rooms (starting @ $158/night). Very international crowd here, the restaurant is really good, and the large shabby-chic lobbby is a popular place to hang out with a drink. http://www.tabardinn.com.

I agree with your recommendation of The Beacon – my husband and I stayed here for a city getaway sans kids and loved the hotel, the price and the location.
